Mechanism of Structure-Driven Nonlinear Instability of Double Tearing Mode in Reversed Magnetic Shear Plasmas
The trigger for the nonlinear destabilization of the double tearing mode (DTM), referred to as a structuredriven instability leading to explosive growth and subsequent collapse, is investigated. We use the reduced MHD equations that solve the evolution of perturbations from an equilibrium deformed by two-dimensional magnetic islands during the slow evolution of the quasi-steady nonlinear regime...
متن کاملElectrostatic Ion-cyclotron Waves Driven by Parallel Velocity Shear
Using a fluid treatment, it is shown that electrostatic waves with angular frequencies ~ ωci (ion cyclotron frequency) propagating at large angles to the ambient magnetic field can be excited in a magnetized plasma by perpendicular shear in the magnetic field aligned plasma flow. The role of density gradients in determining the stability of sheardriven EIC modes is also considered. PACS numbers...
متن کاملKinetic Theories of Geodesic Acoustic Mode in Toroidal Plasmas
Geodesic Acoustic Modes (GAM) are known to constitute a continuous spectrum due to radial inhomogeneities. The existence of a singular layer causes GAM to mode convert to short wavelength kinetic GAM (KGAM) via finite ion Larmor radius (FLR) and finite guiding-center drift-orbit-width (FOW) effects. The dispersion relation of GAM/KGAM with FLR/FOW as well as parallel electric field contribution...
متن کاملDensity limits in toroidal plasmas
In addition to the operational limits imposed by MHD stability on plasma current and pressure, an independent limit on plasma density is observed in confined toroidal plasmas. This review attempts to summarize recent work on the phenomenology and physics of the density limit. Perhaps the most surprising result is that all of the toroidal confinement devices considered operate in similar ranges ...
متن کاملshear suppression of turbulence in diverted H-mode plasmas; role of edge magnetic shear
s. We show that strong edge magnetic shear which is generic to divertor plasmas makes the shearing of turbulence eddys in toroidal geometry more effective. From calculations of the shearing rates for KSTAR edge parameters, we conclude that the enhanced magnetic shear at the diverted KSTAR plasma edge facilitates shear suppression of turbulence and ensuing H-mode transition.
